The tragedy that had kept Havana on edge has culminated with the worst news yet. This Tuesday, rescue teams found the lifeless body of Jonathan Oliva, the 13-year-old boy who had been swept away by an open sewer in the Luyanó neighborhood.
Jonathan, son of Roly and Yami, lived on Fábrica Street between Herrera and Santa Felicia streets in the municipality of 10 de Octubre. On Monday afternoon, while returning from school, he was caught in a flash flood and, unable to react, was sucked down the drain in a matter of seconds.

From the moment of the accident, forces from the Cuban Fire Department, Rescue and Salvage, the Police, and Water Resources launched an intense search along the multiple routes of the sewer system. However, all clues pointed to a single outlet in Havana Bay.
Jonathan’s parents reported him missing after noticing he didn’t return home that afternoon. Later, upon watching video captured by a witness, they were able to identify their son by his clothing and silhouette, confirming, with profound sadness, what they had already feared.
This tragic event has sparked a wave of outrage on social media and among local residents, who blame authorities for the lack of street maintenance and the latent danger of unclogged sewers. This is not the first time similar incidents have been reported in Havana, rekindling the call for urgent measures to prevent future tragedies.
Authorities have confirmed the discovery of the body and have informed the family, to whom they have expressed their condolences. However, they have not yet announced any concrete action to correct the infrastructure deficiencies that have claimed the life of an innocent child.
Jonathan’s community and family demand justice and immediate solutions. We will continue to report on any developments in this unfortunate case.
