THE DARK PAST OF LEON XIV, THE PERFECT STORM IN…

For centuries, the Vatican has been a symbol of faith, mystery, and power. However, rarely has a Pope been talked about with such intensity as that of Leo XIV. His rise to the papacy came as a surprise, but his past—dark, tangled, and riddled with secrets—has begun to emerge, unleashing a veritable storm within the sacred walls of the Vatican.

Leo XIV, born Giovanni Battista Velloni in Naples in 1951, was always seen as a man of firm but reserved faith. However, recent investigations reveal a youth marked by shady connections with Italian political figures accused of corruption, as well as close ties to religious orders investigated for covering up abuse. Although many of these incidents were filed away or covered up, they have resurfaced with force now that he occupies the Chair of Peter.

One of the most sensitive scandals involves his close relationship with the late Cardinal Alfieri, who was accused multiple times of embezzling funds from charities in Latin America. Documents leaked to the Italian press suggest that Velloni, as auxiliary bishop in Rome, approved several financial transactions that are currently under judicial scrutiny. Although the Vatican has denied any wrongdoing, public pressure is mounting.

Added to this is his alleged participation in secret meetings with figures from Opus Dei and ultraconservative groups that allegedly influenced key decisions of the conclave that elected him. Anonymous Vatican sources claim that his election was not a product of the Holy Spirit, but rather a well-calculated strategy to curb the reforms of his predecessor, Francis I.

The “perfect storm”—as international media have dubbed it—is intensifying with new revelations about alleged classified documents that Leo XIV allegedly ordered destroyed after assuming the papacy. These documents, according to former Curia employees, contained the names of clerics accused of abuse and details about secret Swiss bank accounts.

Despite everything, Leo XIV has maintained a serene and firm image in front of the cameras. In his last Sunday message from St. Peter’s Square, he stated: “The truth will set us free, but it will also test our faith.” Many saw in his words a tacit acknowledgment of the questions, although he did not admit guilt.

Meanwhile, the Vatican maintains institutional silence. Some cardinals are calling for an internal investigation, while faithful around the world are torn between disillusionment and hope. Will Leo XIV be able to weather this storm, or will he be remembered as one of the most controversial pontiffs in history?

The Church has faced crises before, but few with this level of media exposure and internal distrust. Time will tell whether this chapter ends in redemption… or in a historic resignation.
